Regional Elite Group (REG) Camp
The Eastern Regional Camp unites the tops skiers from New England and Mid-Atlantic regions for a week of learning and training! This year, Fran and Leigh were nominated to the group and attended camp at UVM.
REG Recap from Fran
I had a great time at REG camp this summer! It was awesome to come together to train, hang out, and compete with all the athletes I see every winter. We had a fun OD day with a hike up Camel’s Hump and two awesome time trials. Aside from training, we went to get creemees, watched Despicable Me 2, and got to hear Ben Ogden and Julia Kern talk about their experiences as professional skiers. Following this Q and A, there was an intense game of basketball where we got to see both olympians in action (who knew Ben Ogden could play basketball in clogs).
REG Recap from Leigh
I had an amazing REG 2024 camp held at UVM. This was my first time attending REG camp, although I had gotten to go to RDG the year previous at Craftsbury, most intensity was canceled due to Canada’s post-fire air wafting into NE territory.
But back to REG! We had so many fun workouts along with 2 time trials and several fun non-ski training memories. A big camp workout was an OD hike up Camel Mountain with some beautiful views to gaze at while eating lunch. Another activity we did involving food (my personal favorite) was going into Burlington Center to get creemes and enjoying them while watching the activity and admiring the beauty of Lake Champlain.
The two TTs were at Jericho shooting range; 8k Skate individual start, and a Classic Kings court. Both were extremely fun, exhilarating, and such a learning opportunity, whether good or bad. I got to practice tactics, and strategies, racing against college kids with much more racing experience than myself, and strategies to battle against my pre-race stress-anxiety.
Aside from that, we had an awesome talk from Ben Ogden and Julia Kern about their journey to becoming World Cup skiers. From their talk the most memorable part that stuck with me was Ben saying he rejoices in taking apart cars, and how if we’re ever bored, to take apart our parent's car for fun.
